Roman emperor, Julian, issues an edict awarding equal rights to all the religions in the Roman Empire, effectively undoing the edicts of Constantine that had made Christianity the imperial religion. Julian was sympathetic to the Jewish people and was prepared to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem, but the Jews’ dreams were dashed when he was assassinated by an Arab Christian. A stone in the Western Wall of the Temple Mount inscribed with a verse from Isaiah and dating from this period reflects the unfulfilled hopes he raised among his Jewish subjects.
