Janet Rosenberg Jagan, a Chicago born Jewess, was elected President of Guyana, making her the first American-born Jewish woman to be elected president of any country. Although she had been involved in the country’s governance for over half a century, she was only elected president after the death of her husband, Guyanese president Cheddi Jagan, who was a dental student when they married in 1943. Rosenberg is considered by many in Guyana to be the mother of the nation.
