About Us
Segula is far more than just a Jewish history magazine. It’s a trip through time, into the intricate tapestry of the Jewish people’s past.
But let’s start with Segula Magazine’s own brief history…
The magazine started out as a history supplement on figures from Jewish history appearing weekly in the Israeli newspaper Makor Rishon. The brainchild of newspaper publisher Shlomo Ben Zvi, it ran for twenty issues, by which time its popularity among readers had paved the way for a stand- alone magazine dedicated to Jewish history, published in Jerusalem in Hebrew and English.
The first issue of Segula Magazine appeared in April 2010, edited by Yoav Sorek, who was later succeeded as editor by Dr. Itamar Brenner. The magazine has appeared monthly ever since, distributed to a wide audience of subscribers in Israel and book-stores country-wide. The English edition of Segula Magazine is published quarterly and reaches readers all over the world. Segula is currently produced by an independent non-profit, promoting Jewish history and consciousness.
Segula today…
Each issue introduces readers to the figures who shaped our people’s history and uncovers stories long forgotten or rarely told. Each issue is a feast of four full-feature articles, superbly written, meticulously researched, and lavishly illustrated with rare photos, maps, timelines, and more, as well as columns on great sites to visit, Jewish books and culture, archaeology, Jews in sports and art & more. Our writers include leading researchers in the field of Jewish history, for whom the magazine serves as a valued platform for bridging the gap between academia and the wider public. Segula Magazine enables them to bring the fruits of their research to a wider audience, balancing academic rigor by filling in the broader context in which historical events occur in a way that’s both inviting and accessible.
Segula Magazine is a priceless resource for self-guided study, esteemed by Jewish studies teachers and tour-guides as an outstanding educational tool. Above all, it’s a historical trip faithful readers continue to look forward to quarterly. Over the past decade and more, Segula has created an archive of materials that brings the rich mosaic of Jewish history vividly to life. This invaluable resource is now being digitized and made available to all subscribers with the help of our non-profit’s generous supporters.
In pursuit of our aim of promoting Jewish history, we’re proud to add this new venture to our printed magazine in Hebrew and English, our social media platforms stimulating interest in the past by connecting it to the present, and our lectures and courses bringing Jewish history into the twenty-first century.
Lose yourself in the depths of the past, deepen your roots and bring the pearls of Jewish heritage to the surface with the Segula Jewish History website and full magazine archive.
