On the third day of the Six Day War, paratroopers from the 55th Brigade (Reserves) commanded by Motta Gur entered the Old City of Jerusalem through Lions’ Gate. By the end of that day’s fighting, the brigade had liberated the Temple Mount, the Western Wall and the rest of the Jewish people’s historic sites within the ancient city walls, held by the Jordanians since their capture in Israel’s War of Independence nineteen years earlier.
