April 14 193 – 24 Nisan 3953

Septimius Severus was crowned Roman Emperor by his legionaries at Camuntum, not far from today’s Vienna. Various candidates had been proclaimed emperor, then assassinated in quick succession since 191, and in the ensuing violence, the Jews living in the Land of Israel had promoted Septimius Severus’ cause. After consolidating his hold on the throne, he rewarded their support by allowing Jews to hold administrative positions throughout the Roman empire. Some historians identify Septimius Severus with the Emperor Antoninus described in the Talmud as a close friend and associate of Rabbi Judah the Prince, author of the Mishna.
