September 1 1939 – 17 Elul 5699
World War Two is considered to have begun on September 1 1939 with Hitler’s invasion of Poland. The Holocaust of European Jewry went into high gear as Nazi racist actions against Jews extended beyond the borders of Germany and Austria into Eastern Europe, where Hitler began to implement his murderous policies without fear or constraint. Hitler’s excuse for his invasion was that he was liberating the Sudetenland, a border region awarded to Poland by the Allies after Germany’s defeat in World War One. A million and a half Jews served in the Allied armies fighting Hitler, their numbers increasing as the facts of his ruthless destruction of Jewish communities without distinctions or mercy, gradually penetrated Western consciousness.
