The Widow’s Cure

Ahmed I became sultan of the Ottoman Empire following the death of Mehmed III. When the sultan contracted smallpox and his doctors despaired of curing him, he turned to Buha Eskenazi, widow of the Jewish court physician Solomon Eskenazi, who saved his life.
