October 3 1908 – 21 Tishrei 5669

The first edition of Pravda was published in Vienna, printed in Lviv (then in Poland), and smuggled into Russia. Its editors included Adolph Joffe and Leon Trotsky (Lev Davidovich Bronstein), two Jews exiled from Russia. Trotsky had been sent to Siberia for revolutionary activity but escaped en route. He returned to Russia in May 1917, just in time to overthrow the czar and partner with Lenin in running the new Bolshevik Republic.
