January 23 1639 – 18 Shevat 5399

Eleven Jewish converts to Christianity were burned at the stake in Lima, Peru, condemned by the Inquisition for Judaizing along with dozens of other Jews. One martyr, Francisco Maldonna de Silva, had been incarcerated for twelve years, throughout which priests pressured him to recant. He recorded his arguments against them on over two hundred pages, written with a chicken bone. Having made a rope out of maize stalks, he swung himself out of his cell, not to freedom but to urge other prisoners to remain faithful to Judaism.
