Trinitatis Church was founded amid the Thirty Years’ War. The Treaty of
Westphalia, which ended the war in 1648, recognized the right of every
sovereign state to determine its own religion, making the Danish church
both a national and religious symbol. During World War II, with Denmark
under Nazi occupation, the church viewed saving the country’s Jews as
both a religious and a national obligation. Priests were key players in the
secret evacuation of this population, and the Torah scrolls belonging to the
city’s Great Synagogue were hidden by the minister of Trinitatis in his
nearby church.
