Ivanhoe, or Rebecca, the Jewess, a dramatization of Sir Walter Scott’s famous novel, opened at Niblo’s Garden Theater on Broadway. Set in 12th-century London against the backdrop of the Crusades, the hit play depicted sparring knights, a plot to kill a Jew named Isaac, and the hero’s doomed love for the Jew’s daughter, Rebecca, who ultimately leaves anti-Semitic England behind forever.
