Innovative teacher and communal worker Rebecca Gratz passed away. Member of a prominent Pennsylvania Jewish family, Gratz spearheaded many philanthropic and social organizations, and in 1838 she founded the first Jewish Sunday School, a model that spread rapidly over the United States. The basic Jewish education provided by these schools filled a growing void as Jewish families abandoned tradition in their efforts to integrate into American society.
