Duke Wladyslaw Lokietek became King Ladislaus I of Poland. He granted further rights to his Jewish subjects by applying Duke Boleslaw the Pious’ Statute of Kalisz (1264) throughout the country. This charter of Jewish liberties was based on similar rights issued to Jews in Germany a few years earlier and set a precedent of toleration toward Polish Jewry lasting over three hundred years. Polish Jews grew to feel so at home in the country that they even interpreted its name as an invitation – Po Lin, Hebrew for “Dwell here.”
