Salvation in Saragossa

February 2 1420 – 17 Shevat 5180

The Jews of Saragossa were spared from slaughter at the hands of King Alfonso V of Aragon. A convert had told the king that the Jews were planning to bring empty Torah cases to the parade in which scrolls from all twelve local synagogues were traditionally marched before him. The danger was averted when all twelve synagogue beadles dreamed that the prophet Elijah had warned them to return the scrolls to their cases before the parade. The traitor was hanged, and the Jews recorded the story in a scroll to be read every year on Saragossa Purim.
