In Vilna, Nahum Shtif established YIVO (Yidisher Visenshaftlikher Institut), the Yiddish Scientific Institute, to promote scholarly research in Yiddish, focusing on eastern Europe Jewry. In addition to gathering thousands of documents, photos, and artifacts relating to eastern European Jewish culture and folklore, YIVO standardized Yiddish spelling. Now based in New York, the institute remains active.
