Jerusalem
A Khwarazmian army laid siege to Jerusalem and attacked the area of
Mount Zion. The battle was part of a larger struggle between the holy city’s
Crusader defenders, aided by their Muslim allies from Damascus and the
Ayyubid sultanate of Egypt. The Khwarazmian Empire in Asia Minor had
been defeated a decade earlier by the Mongols, but when the remnants of
its army arrived in Jerusalem, the locals fled in the thousands. They soon
returned, only to be butchered by the conquerors, perhaps lured back by
deceptive Crusader banners waving from the city ramparts.
