December 30 1066 – 9 Tevet 4827
Joseph Hanaggid, the son and successor of the famous Jewish vizier and poet Samuel Hanaggid, was dragged from his palace and murdered together some four thousand other Jews in what has become known as the Granada Massacre.
Like his father, Joseph was both a military leader and a statesman, but his pride and love of luxury alienated local Muslims. The murderous mob was incited by Joseph’s rival, the fanatical poet Abu Ishak.
