A year and a half after rising to power, Adolf Hitler disposed of most of his opponents within the Brownshirts, led by Ernst Röhm. Originally unemployed hoodlums, this group’s members disliked Hitler’s growing alliance with German conservatives and frail President Paul von Hindenburg. Persuaded that Röhm was plotting against him, Hitler produced a hit list of over two hundred of his erstwhile supporters, leaving him the undisputed leader of Germany.
