The first burning of the Talmud and other printed Hebrew books took place in the Campo dei Fiori on the first day of Rosh Hashana. Rival Hebrew printers in Venice – both Christian – had accused one another of publishing heresy in their competing versions of the Talmud, each hoping to gain a monopoly. The subsequent involvement of virulently anti-Semitic Pope Pius IV resulted in a ten-year moratorium on Hebrew publishing as well as the confiscation and public burning of nearly all extant volumes of the Talmud.
