The struggle begun by Matathias and Judah Maccabee reached a successful conclusion when Judah’s brother Simon was appointed high priest and recognized by the Seleucid Empire as ruler of an independent Jewish state. Simon built on the conquests of his brother Jonathan to stabilize the Hasmonean kingdom.
