Jericho
The land of Israel experienced its most violent earthquake since
seismic measurements began, reaching 6.2 on the Richter scale.
The epicenter was in the northern Dead Sea, but the most
extensive damage occurred in crowded cities – Jerusalem,
Jericho, Nablus, Ramle, and Lydda. Over 300 buildings collapsed
in the Holy City, but Nablus was hardest hit, with over 150 fatalities
and a third of all homes destroyed. Jewish communities suffered
less but reached out to help. Tel Aviv adopted Nablus, sending
rescue delegations and supplies. The Jewish response was so
different from that of neighboring Arab countries that one Arab
newspaper editor promised never again to defame Jews on this
date.
