Each amulet in this set is dominated by a drawing of an animal-shaped angel topped by the name of one of the chariot creatures in Ezekiel’s vision: “As for the likeness of their faces, each had the face of a man; each of the four had the face of a lion on the right side, each of the four had the face of an ox on the left side, and each of the four had the face of an eagle” (Ezekiel 1:10). This amulet depicts the lion.
The stand beneath each angel bears the name of one of the four biblical couples from whom the Jewish people descends: Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, and Jacob and Leah. Rachel, who died in childbirth, is understandably omitted from the set. This amulet shows Abraham and Sarah.
