The Modern Joshua

Jabotinsky in uniform in World War I

September 22 1918 – 16 Tishrei 5679

After previous attempts to conquer the Umm Shart Bridge spanning the River Jordan failed, it was finally conquered by a company under the command of Vladimir Ze’ev Jabotinsky of the 38th Royal Fusiliers – one of the British army’s four Jewish battalions during the First World War. This was the first location in the Holy Land to be conquered by a Hebrew regiment in modern times. Symbolically this ford of the Jordan was not far from the fords of Gilgal, where the Israelites entered the Land of Israel under Joshua’s leadership.
