Dubrovnik’s Synagogue Damaged by Earthquake

April 6 1667 – 12 Nisan 5427

A particularly violent earthquake struck the Croatian city of Dubrovnik – one of the two strongest quakes felt in the area in the last two and a half millennia.  Five thousand people were killed and the damage to property was immense. Many buildings were reduced to rubble, others, like the ancient Sephardic synagogue, required extensive repair. The synagogue, whose original structure dates from the 14th century, has been restored many times since, and is the oldest Sephardic synagogue still functioning today.
