Suleiman the Magnificent Dies

September 7 1556 – 3 Tishrei 5317

The reign of Suleiman the Magnificent came to an end. Suleiman had welcomed Jews fleeing Christian persecution, including Dona Gracia and Joseph Nassi. He interceded with Pope Paul IV in an attempt to save a group of conversos condemned to the stake in Ancona, Italy, encouraged Jewish settlement in Safed and Tiberias, and rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem that stand to this day.
