February 29, 1236 – Adar 21, 4996
Narbonne, Provence
Incited Christian crowd, fed by the rumor that a Jew was beating a Christian to death, began to riot and attack the Jews of Narbonne, Provence. Surprisingly, Governor Don Imeryk sent troops to protect the Jewish community. The riots ceased, but the library of Rabbi Meir ben Yitzhak was destroyed by the anguished mob. The Jews of the city henceforth marked the date of Adar 21st as “Purim Narbonne.”
Local “Purim”s were celebrated in many Jewish communities to mark their salvation from potentially bloody troubles. Such communities were Algires, Padua, Tiberias, Frankfurt, Saragoza, and others.
