In perhaps the first governmental attempt to regulate kashrut in the United States, New York’s common council revoked the butcher’s license of Nicholas Smart, a non-Jew, for affixing Jewish seals to non-kosher meat. The validity of various organizations involved in kashrut certification has plagued Jews into the 21st century, occasionally reaching the courts.
