Christian IV, king of Denmark, heeded the advice of his Jewish “mint master,” Albert Dionis, and invited the Portuguese Jews of Amsterdam to settle in the town of Glückstadt, promising them freedom of worship and other privileges. Similar encouragement was extended to the Jews of Hamburg.
