Walls of Acre Breached

Hospitalier Master Mathieu de Clermont defending the walls of Acre, by Dominique Papety, circa 1840

May 28 1291 – 28 Sivan 5051

The Mamluks breached the walls of Acre, capturing the city from the Crusaders and bringing down the curtain on the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem in the Holy Land. Acre was the last city left to the Crusaders, and it held out against the Muslim siege for a month. The Crusader defenders tried time and again to repulse the forces ranged against them, while the Mamluks, for their part, subjected the walls and its central tower to constant bombardment. The Crusader ruler of the Holy Land, Henry II, King of Cyprus and King of Jerusalem, tried to negotiate with Sultan Khalil, but realizing his enemy had reached their last reserves, the Sultan refused to discuss anything but the terms of the Crusaders’ capitulation. Wisely, it turned out, as within weeks, the city was in his hands.
