In Saphed Rabbi Joseph Karo completed his Beth Yosef commentary on the earlier Halakhic code Arba Turim (Four Columns) authored by Rabbi Jacob Ben Harush. This work was the basis for Rabbi Karo’s less comprehensive but more readable Shulkhan Arukh, which has ever since been considered the most authoritative work, of governing every aspect of Jewish communal and personal law.
