Father Giuseppe Girotti murdered in Dachau

18 Nisan 5705 – April 1 1945

Father Giuseppe Girotti, a Catholic priest and professor of theology at the Dominican theological seminary of Turin, Italy, was murdered in Dachau concentration camp. Girotti was a graduate of the French École Biblique in Jerusalem, where he became involved in inter-faith work. During the war he hid many Jews in his monastery in Turin, and provided others with fake documents and an escape route from Italy to safety in Switzerland. Girotti was caught helping a wounded Jewish partisan and arrested. Held at first in various Italian concentration camps, he was moved to Dachau where he survived six months before being murdered by lethal injection four weeks before the camp was liberated.
