Farewell to the Empress

Portrait of Queen Victoria by Amedée Forestier, 1897

February 3 1901 – 14 Shevat 5661

A memorial service for Queen Victoria was held at the Hurva Synagogue in Jerusalem in the presence of the British consul. The city’s Ashkenazic chief rabbi, Samuel Salant, officiated at the service, which was translated into English by Ephraim Cohen-Reiss. The event was so well attended that police had to control the crowd, and the consul announced that he’d telegraph his government describing the respects paid to the queen.
