Seventh Quake

Ruins in Beth Shean left by the eighth century earthquake

January 19 746 – 23 Shevat 4506

A devastating earthquake struck Jerusalem, Beth Shean, and Tiberias, killing tens of thousands, flattening property, and more or less destroying the Jewish community living relatively peacefully under Muslim rule. Contemporary liturgical poems describe this as the “seventh earthquake,” and a fast was established on 23 Shevat to mark the calamity. Historians debate whether the quake occurred in 746 or 749.
