The Price of Contempt

Pope Paul IV

September 22 1558 – 10 Tishrei 5319

Five years after Pope Paul IV authorized the burning of the Talmud in Rome, Italian Jews suffered a further blow. A Jewish apostate burst into the synagogue in the town of Recanati in the middle of Yom Kippur services waving a cross, and called on his fellow Jews to convert to Christianity on the holiest day of the Jewish year. The congregation drove him from the building, but paid a heavy price – the wholesale expulsion of all the Jews from the city.
