During the 1972 Summer Olympics 11 members from the Israeli Olympic team were taken hostage by Palestinian members of the terrorist group Black September. Two team members were killed immediately. The German police tried rescuing the remaining nine members of the team, but failed after additional information about the terrorist was ignored, and the hostages were killed. Olympic games were suspended on the day of the hijack, but official memorial services were’t held until the 2016 Summer Olympics. Mahmud Abbas (Abu Mazen), who became head of Palestinian National Authority, helped fund the Munich terror attack.
