Hiroshima

The US Air Force dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. After the US military realized that the fighting spirit of the Japanese was not broken even after tough battles like the one on Okinawa Island in the Pacific, and their soldiers were not ready to surrender even in a desperate situation, the Americans decided to cancel their plan to invade Japan. The US military possesed only three operational atomic bombs, and they decided to drop one bomb on an important military and industrial center in Japan as a warning sign in order to make the Japanese surrender. The port of Hiroshima was chosen because of its naval base, large industrial center and important military headquarters.

US President Harry Truman, who learned of the existence of the Manhattan Project just four months earlier, after the death of incumbent President Roosevelt, ordered the bomb to be dropped following the recommendation of the ‘Interim Committee’ regarding the new weapon. On the morning of August 6, a B-29 bomber called Enola Gay dropped the atomic bomb called “Little Boy.” The bomb exploded about 500 meters above the city, and in a moment destroyed thousands of buildings and killed tens of thousands of people.

A new sun was born.
