Jews in New Zealand

בית הכנסת הישן באוקלנד, ניו זילנד, נוסד בשנת 1885 וכיום הוא חלק מאוניברסיטת אוקלנד.

January 7 1843 – 6 Shevat 5603

Abraham Hort led the first services at the Wellington Hebrew Congregation in New Zealand. Jewish traders from England were among the first Europeans to settle on the island in the 1830s. (Two of these Jews, John Montefiore, and David Nathan, settled in Auckland.) Hort arrived in Wellington fully equipped to start a Jewish community. With him were his wife and daughters, a shohet and mohel named David Isaacs, and the blessing of the chief rabbi of England.
