The Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem Falls

Ruins of the Atlit Fortress, 2012

August 14 1291 – 17 Elul 5051

The last Crusader ship slipped away from the Atlit Fortress (which the knights had called Château Pèlerin, or Pilgrim Castle) where refugees from all over the Galilee had gathered after the destruction of Acre, the last capital of the Crusader kingdom, by the Saracens. The last group remaining were Knight Templars, who sailed for Cypress to re-establish their order there. This was the final curtain for the Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem, established almost two centuries earlier under Godfrey of Bouillon, after the Battle of Ashkelon exactly 192 years and two days before.
