England’s First Fleet deposited over seven hundred convicts at Botany Bay, on the Australian coast. According to Dr. Raymond Apple, rabbi emeritus of the Great Synagogue in Sydney, there were at least sixteen Jews among them when New South Wales was founded as a penal colony that year. Thus began the Jewish community down under.
