At the End of the Day

23 Tishrei 3081 – September 27 681 BCE

Elam

King Khumma-Khaldash of Elam died of a seizure. A powerful kingdom southeast of Babylonia, Elam was the bitter enemy of the ascendant Assyrian Empire. Babylon’s rebellion had brought Assyrian ruler Sennacherib scurrying back from Jerusalem, where he’d left King Hezekiah virtually imprisoned in his Judean capital in 701 BCE.In 689 BCE, Sennacheribdestroyed Babylon, then turned to subdueing its allies. His struggle with Elam lasted eight years, but he won in the end – only to be assassinated in Assyria two months after the death of Khumma-Khaldash.
